Back Home

Hi Folks -

New posts coming, I promise. In the meantime, I'm catching up on a whole host of things. Here's a link to an old one to tide you over. This was one of the most fun posts I've ever written. At the time I wrote it, I was a knitting novice and a new sock knitter. But I still think it is important - the reality is that socks are the one thing you'll always need more of. And even if it doesn't become an emergency, homemade socks are way nicer than boughten.

Hi Sharon. I really liked this post the first time I read it and have been meaning to look through past posts to find it again, so many thanks for saving me the trouble. One thing I just didn't get before I started knitting socks - and I thought "why on earth do people bother, they only cost a couple of euros for a pair?" - was just how comfortable they are to wear. The other day my eight year old daughter said she thought I should start to sell the socks I make. Later I came across some little drawings of adverts she had done, featuring socks with speech bubbles saying "I am cozy", "I am comfy" and, as you know, they really are. Sock knitters know how addictive knitting socks can be - your post has given me some measure of justification for this constant knitting (and giving away of) socks. Thank You....

Thanks for reposting this. It was very interesting. Any idea why none of the links are linked? I see lots of "you can find it here", which I assume was a link. But no link...

Also, in your reasons to knit, you left out "keeps you warm" (while you knit, that is). My mom could work up a sweat knitting sweaters - handy in the Chicago winters. That probably implies "burns calories," too. :-)

A friend of mine is dying, slowly, within the next year or two. For complex reasons, there is little I can for him. After re-reading this, I found my pattern for diabetic socks and plan to start casting on tonight as soon as I find out his shoe size.
