Garden Dreaming

Whole family is down sick, so the several longer essays I've been working on are on the back burner while I wash sheets and tend cranky little people. My own retreat when things are in crisis is to the perfect spring garden of my imagination - especially valuable after several days of pouring rain (and our roof needs replacing) and then a giant ice storm.

My roof may leak, the children whine and I'm not feeling so hot myself, but in my head, it is spring, and I'm sitting on a mulched pathway, transplanting delicate baby seedlings into the garden bed. In my imagination it is warm, and sunny, and smells of earth and herbs.

And I get to fantasize about new things - what will the wolfberries taste like fresh? How much skirret do I want? And of course, my garden will be plenty - no running out of strawberry jam in January next year, this year's strawberries will burst off the vine and into the jars all by themselves.

And, of course, there seed catalogs to "help" me envision it. Lush, perfect plants in world without weeds in color saturated photos - of coures my herb garden will look just like that, with the orange calendulas, the purple sage and the chive blossoms harmonizing.

It won't be like that, not quite, although it will be wonderful, but a girl can dream. What are you dreaming about?

It doesn't feel like spring here either, but the last few mornings I have noticed the birds making a bit of a racket, so hopefully they know something I don't!

I've tagged you for a meme, the details are on my blog.

I'm dreaming of planting two tiers of three types of blueberries and dividing up the one rhubarb to become multiple plants. My first attempts at edible landscaping! Oh, and I want to tuck in some edible and useful flowering plants like calendula, yarrow and maybe even borage. There'll be the two or three tall raised beds for our experiments in food growing with pollenator attractors (floweres to be determined later) arranged all around. The raspberry canes we transplanted last fall will bloom and produce berries and produce lots of new canes. My attempts at growing onions in self watering containers will be successful. Our pile will compost quickly so we can use it the following year. And, finally, the moose won't wander through and consider the yard their own personal salad bar.

We are about to go into our main planting season too. Summer is too hot for may things, so we have big plantings in March and April to catch the cooler weather.

I am dreaming of eating snow peas off the vine, of lovely crisp cabbages and radishes. I wish for a wetter winter than last year (dry as a bone, it was) and enough rainfall that the garden will thrive without too much attention. I am imagining myself diligently recording the details of my plantings and harvests in my diary (but fear that it won't be done regularly enough). I'm looking foward to long days in the garden without the heat chasing me inside before 10am!

I wish you well for Spring and hope your family recovers soon!

I'm dreaming of sun!! And some dry land!! It seems to have rained constantly since November or so, the garden is a bog, everything is drenched in water, our road is a mudhole. Even if it's quite warm it's impossible to work in the garden because it's so wet!!

No winter, no snow, no sun. Just grey, damp, foggy nothing. Which is EXACTLY how global warming is supposed to look like in our part of the world...

Oh, well, I'll put on woolen socks and rubber boots and head out into the garden anyway to look for signs of spring. At least the birds are singing.

I had a literal garden dream last night. I was organizing a school garden, and it had runner beans and GIANT carrots and lots of herbs. And a patch of interspersed chamomile and clover like I'm thinking of actually putting in the front yard. I hope mine turns out looking anywhere near that lush.

I'm dreaming of less sun and heat and more rain. Now at 10 a.m. in inland South Florida, it's 99 degrees Fahrenheit, unprecedented for early February. Global warming, indeed! It's too hot for the kale and broccoli, but at least the collards and arugula are doing well.

Get well soon!

I'm looking out at a foot of snow and thinking of warmth and sunshine, of the plans to take out the parking spaces that are occupying a third of the available space in the back garden, and the new raised beds DS and I will build and set down in their stead.

I'm thinking of the hazelnuts and currants and almonds we'll plant this year, of the herb garden and crabapple trees my neighbour Christine and I are going to put in where the driveway separates our houses now, of tearing out another ten feet of the front lawn alongside the brick path that leads to the front door and filling the space with lavender and herbs and xeric flowers.

I'm wondering how well the fig trees will do this year, with three times the normal annual snowfall waiting for the spring melt and no water restrictions (and two more rainbarrels on order), and if we can find space for more grapevines, and working out a fair swap of our apricots for apples and pears and some of my neighbour's honey.

I'm hoping winter passes soon.

Hope your children are well again soon, Sharon.
